Nigerians win $1000 at 2014 Intel Fair award

Nigerians win $1000 at 2014 Intel Fair award Words from Nahimah Ajikanle Nurudeen, Lagos Nigerian students emerged one the winners in the 2014 Special Award of Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) which held in Los Angeles, USA. At the award, Nigeria showcased its scientific innovation and development in research and eventually, Ibukunoluwa Ruth and Eveshorhewa Sophia of Doregos Academy Ipaja, Lagos won Life Science Award of $1,000 courtesy Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. The awards were in the category of Medicine and Health Science for the project titled: ‘Walnut: Sustainable Solution to Halitosis’ for the treatment and diagnosis of Halitosis. Nigeria was represented with six projects and 12 students at the finals in Los Angeles, a follow-up to the 2014 National Fair Competition that held in Akwa Ibom state earlier in the year where they emerged winners.
The National Festival of School Science (NAFESS) an affiliate of Intel ISEF is organized annually by Genius Illumina. Genius collaborated with Intel Corporation, Shell Petroleum Development Company SPDC/NNPC-NAPIMS and Interswitch Nigeria Ltd to organize the Local Science Fair in Nigeria and prepares winners for the Intel ISEF. The Corporate Affairs Manager, Intel Corporation, Babatunde Akinola, “Intel is proud to know that Nigerians youths are devoted to the growth of science and technology." He listed other five projects that featured in the Intel ISEF finals from Nigeria to include, fabricated 2 WP Tri-Generator, electronic pest control device, Traffic Control System for the Blind, and a Power Failure Solution.
